Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls

The Falls are easily accessible from the Alaka State Park, where you can take a pleasant, paved trail to excellent vantage points of both the 442 foot high Alaka Falls and the intriguing Kahuna Falls, which measure 100 feet high. Because these falls are some of the most popular in the state, you can avoid crowds by visiting them in the early morning or late afternoon. However, both the Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls are spectacular to behold regardless of the time of day.

Maoula Falls in Halawa Valley

Located in Halawa Valley in Molokai, the Maoula Falls are the most accessible of the two famous waterfalls in this legendary Valley. Not only are the Falls themselves stunning, but the area by which they are surrounded is the perfect place to learn about Hawaiian culture, take a swim, or enjoy a picnic lunch. The drop is believed to be approximately 700 feet high, while the falls themselves are 250 feet high and their natural, tiered structure makes them extraordinary and unique.

Wailua Falls on Kauai

Waimoku Falls Maui

One of the most unforgettable waterfalls on the island of Maui, the Waimoku Falls are 400 feet high and definitely live up to their reputation. They can be reached from the Pipiwai Trail on Maui or you can access them by going through the Haleakala National Park in the Kipahulu region. The Waimoku Falls Maui flows straight down a smooth wall of lava rock, and at times appears almost like a sheet of glass, glistening in the sun. It shows particularly well in the afternoon, although you will be mesmerized by these falls anytime of the day.

Papalaua Falls

Located in Papalaua Valley on the North Shore of Molokai is a remote 1200 foot-high waterfall, which is Hawaii’s tallest waterfall. With impressive tiers, and each drop ending in its own pool, these extraordinary falls are one of the most breathtaking sights you can imagine. The water flows along a steep fissure, which was designed by natural occurrences over the centuries. This deep crevice causes different sections of the falls to flow at different rates of speed.

The middle part can be viewed from the sea or you can take an adventurous and rustic hike to get closer to this outstanding waterfall. If you choose to view the falls from the sea, the lower part appears to fade from sight, but it is actually hidden in the deep chasm. A sight to behold, these falls are particularly beautiful in the morning and late afternoon.

Nanue Falls

The Nanue Falls are situated on the big Island, and are an intriguing series of waterfalls that can be viewed from various vantage points along the steep trail of the Nanue River. Many people observe them from a nearby bridge, as this eliminates the need to hike the steep trail. However, if you enjoy the great outdoors and physically fit, you will likely find this type of hike a thrill all by itself.

Always exercise caution when hiking or viewing any waterfall. Additionally, if you take a guided excursion, closely follow the recommendations of your guide or any cautionary material or pamphlets you receive.
