Timeless Tenerife
Spain is a nation rich in cultural diversity and has an intriguing and colourful history. It is widely known for its exquisite, unique flowers and stunning scenery. Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands–once known as the Dog Islands–and measures 130 kilometres across and almost 100 kilometers North to South.
Beaches and Activities
Since the 1960s, Tenerife has steadily gained popularity as a holiday destination. The island is ideal for families as it offers multiple attractions for adults, teenagers and children. Families can explore cultural heritage sites, take boat trips or other excursions, or just relax in the sun. Its panoramic beaches have fine, white sand that beckons to holiday makers from around the world. Additional attractions include sailing, swimming, shopping, sightseeing, snorkelling, fishing, dinner theatres, and even golf. Spain is also famous for windsurfing and there are those who visit Tenerife solely for this purpose. There is also a wide selection of family-friendly entertainment options for travellers who enjoy musical or theatrical performances.
Those searching for challenging activities in Tenerife may wish to consider a climb to Mount Teide’s summit. Families who are adventurous will never forget the unique experience of hiking to the top of Mount Teide, as it is Spain’s highest mountain. Visitors can choose to take a portion of the route by cable car which allows individuals of all ages to make the ascent.
Shopping and Dining
Visitors will find there is a vast array of cafes, restaurants and pubs, which include Carnarian, Mediterranean, English and European style cuisine. The Tenerife shopping district is opened Monday through Saturday, with limited hours on Sundays. However, one should be aware that shops are typically not opened all day, but rather split their hours of operation into two shifts, which typically run from 8:00am to 1:00pm and 4:00pm to midnight. Most shops are closed between 1:00pm and 4:00pm, which is traditionally “siesta time” in Tenerife. This trend was started hundreds of years ago by vendors who experienced little or no business during these hours due to the island’s excessive afternoon heat, and the tradition is still observed today.
Shopping centres which cater for tourists usually have a variety of establishments all in one location, such as supermarkets, souvenir shops, restaurants, night clubs, and apparel boutiques. Tenerife, similar to all the Canary Islands, offers duty free shopping for merchandise such as alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco, leather, pottery, and perfume.
With its sun, spectacular flowers, beautiful scenery and friendly residents, Tenerife, Spain offers something for everyone. Regardless of the time of year one plans to visit this intriguing country, it is sure to be an unforgettable trip.
