The Bimini Nature Trail–It’s More Than You Think
Those planning a trip to the Bahamas will not want to miss a trek on the Bimini Nature Trail. The one-mile loop is situated on South Bimini and begins and ends at the Bimini Sands Resort. This eco-friendly trail is one of the best of its kind on any of the Bahama Islands, and offers tourists a wonderful chance to view a wide variety of plants, birds, reptiles and other exotic animals in their natural environment.
Developed by the resort from which it takes its name, the trail is slightly elevated and lined with beautiful hardwood trees, such as poisonwood and gumbo-limbo trees. Most of the trail is shady, and has many interesting stopping points along the way. These include the ruins of the historic Conch House, which is particularly nice at sunset. Additionally, tourists can view a pirate’s exhibit dedicated to the swashbuckling history of the island. Other activities along the trail include the following:
Birding
Bird lovers will consider the Bimini Trail a virtual paradise, and can expect to see a broad range of species, such as Dendroica Warblers, Cape Mays, Prairie Warblers and Palm Parrots along the trail. Photo opportunities abound for those who want to capture special moments of their trek through this bird sanctuary.
Self-Guided Tours
Those who enjoy exploring on their own or with just a few others can indulge in a self-guided tour. High-quality signs with detailed information guide tourists through the island trail’s flora and fauna, and warn of any areas where poisonous plants or dangerous animals may appear.
Guided Tours
Guided tours are perhaps the best way to experience the trail and see everything it offers. With a professional guide, visitors can learn the area’s history and ecology while enjoying an up close and personal view of the animals and plants that call Bimini home. On a guided tour, guests can also handle certain animals, such as the endemic Bimini Boa, and tour guides explain why the indigenous Boa is so important to the ecosystem of the island. A great learning experience, guided tours will likely always remain popular on the Bimini Trail.
Terrain
The terrain is only slightly elevated, and therefore the trail is suitable for tourists of all ages. However, those with mobility impairments have the option of traveling the trail on a scooter or golf cart. The trail is pet-friendly, but pets must remain on leashes at all times. It is also advisable to bring mosquito spray, as these and other insects will likely be encountered.
Guided tours should be booked in advance, but the trail is typically open to tourists at all times. Those who add this excursion to their itinerary when visiting the Bahamas can expect an unforgettable experience.
