Beyond the Obvious-Explore Nevada Landmarks You Never Knew Existed

A Ghostly Supper

If you’ve decided to make your way to the ghost town of Rhyolite during your Nevada adventure, keep the eerie feeling alive and travel just a bit farther to view a ghostly version of da Vinci’s famous Christ’s Last Supper. This striking, if not somewhat menacing, work of art is guaranteed to give you goosebumps, or at the very least have you glancing over your shoulder as you drive away.

Created by Albert Szukalski in 1984, the sculpture is found at the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Beatty, Nevada and is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Beware, however; when you take a second glance, the characters seem to disappear, leaving only empty white cloaks to outline their human form. Or perhaps those human forms were never there at all. Visit this unique optical illusion and decide for yourself.

Luna Mystique

About an hour southwest of Tonopah, Nevada, empty space becomes even lonelier. Located in a volcanic field measuring more than 90 square miles is Nevada’s largest maar. This magnificent lunar crater appears at first like something from the set of a science fiction movie.

The unusual geologic formation occurs when lava contacts groundwater, a combination that led to the birth of this otherworldly crater. Bring your camera for a never-before, never-again photo opportunity, but be prepared to feel very small against the backdrop of this outstanding landmark.

Down a Lonely Road

The “middle of nowhere” ceases to be a cliché when you travel US Route 50 to a specific area of the Silver State’s historic Lincoln Highway. Here, you’ll find an isolated wild west style saloon nestled in the heart of the Nevada desert. Featuring an antique wagon, an old-fashioned neon bar sign, and wild and whacky decorations that include bull skulls, this one-of-a-kind eatery dates back to the early 19th century and was once a bona fide stop on the Pony Express.

Aptly named Middlegate Station, its situated between Westgate and Eastgate–twin, gate-shaped cuts in the mountains by which it is flanked. Even if you’re merely there to take pictures, consider gassing up, since it’s the only filling station for over 50 miles in both directions. If your body needs a little fuel as well, enjoy the restaurant’s rustic splendor while indulging in a “Middlegate Monster Burger.” You’ll leave with a free T-shirt if you can finish it all by yourself.

A Tranquil Falling Off

In Nevada’s lonely, far north corner, you’ll find the Santa Rosa Range, and its outstanding 10,000-foot-tall peaks. This range is relatively dry, like the rest of the Santa Rosas. However, because Falls Creek drains to the west, the range opens up to the unexpected vista of a glorious waterfall.

The most famous waterfall you’ve never heard of, Falls Creek Falls is a landmark that’s well worth the rendezvous, and the photo-opportunities are unparalleled. Depending on the time of year you visit–and the water level–you may have the opportunity to feel the spray of cool, rushing water as it crashes into the pool below the Falls. Awe-inspiring, yet extraordinarily tranquil, this lovely landmark is the perfect place to reset your mind to a calmer state and experience something beyond the ordinary.
